Life-Saving Medical Equipment
The Friends of PICU Charity supports patients and their families, through providing funds for Southampton Children’s Hospital PICU to purchase state-of-the-art equipment, which will enable them to meet the demand for the best quality, innovation, and specialist health care of the many critically ill children admitted every day, all year round.
This includes different formats of ventilators, the latest ECMO heating and cooling equipment, transport trolley’s for the regular PICU road ambulance and also for the air ambulance, baby pods for newborn and infant safe transport, breast expressing pumps and milk heaters for nursing mothers, CritiCoolers for effective thermal temperature regulation, newborn warming and caring beds known as ‘Giraffe warmers’, monitors for measuring oxygen levels, bedside blood clotting testing machine to speed up testing in specific circumstances, 2 new special intensive care beds with multiple new features, specialist patient seat to help aid treatment and recovery of children with complex postural needs, to simulation equipment for bronchoscopies and complete PICU simulation testing for staff training, and the very latest handheld ultrasound scanning equipment – where PICU medical staff were the first to test in the UK.
This and much more has only been possible with the assistance of Friends of PICU.
We fund vital life-saving equipment that allows the clinical team to take advantage of changing demands, emergency treatment, and developments in medical skill, knowledge and technology to deliver consistently high and constantly increasing detailed care to over 1,000 children admitted to the PICU each year.
Together we have made a huge positive impact on the level of care provided by the PICU at Southampton Children’s Hospital.
