The region covered by Friends of PICU
South of England and the Channel Islands
Many of the over 1,000 patients admitted to the PICU each year are through emergency admissions from the 27 regional referring hospitals across the South of England and the Channel Islands, including;
- Berkshire
- Oxfordshire
- Buckinghamshire
- Northamptonshire
- Wiltshire
- Gloucestershire
- Somerset
- Dorset
- South Devon
- West Sussex
- Surrey
- Isle of Wight
- Hampshire
In addition patients are admitted from children’s wards at Southampton Children’s Hospital.
To safely deliver these patients to PICU, a specialist PICU medial team is sent to stabilise and retrieve them. The retrieval team will consist of a doctor, specialised retrieval nurse and a critical care technologist/driver. A PICU consultant will be available at all times for advice if not part of the team.
