In September 2022, Islay and Jason took on the incredible Thames Path Ultra Challenge, with England’s greatest river providing a wonderful backdrop for an unforgettable challenge – all in aid of Friends of PICU. Islay and Jason raised an absolutely fantastic £1,397.00!
Islay shared with us “Since our daughter, Callie, was discovered to have multiple heart defects at 10 days old we have found ourselves in need of the specialist care from the team in Southampton’s PICU. It’s not a place we ever really knew existed and not a place I ever thought we would have to visit. Callie has required this care 3 times now and it’s never off the cards that she may need this again.
We are so eternally grateful to the NHS, all the doctors, nurses, assistants, ambulance drivers, administrators, and everyone else who keeps this unit running. This team, along with the surgical team, made sure I got to take home my baby time and again and for this reason we decided to take part in the Thames Path Ultra Challenge to raise money and awareness of Friends of PICU. The 50km walk took us from Putney Bridge in London to Runnymede in Surrey and my goodness it’s safe to say it was tougher than we had anticipated – BUT WE DID IT. Even more surprisingly, some of it was quite enjoyable.
Callie is now 8 years old and doing well.
We will crop up from time to time when the next challenge rears its head and we can, again, help raise awareness and some additional funding”
